VoIP is the making of a phone call over the Internet.

Making phone calls over the Internet has been the 'norm' for modern businesses with the company's phone system integrated with their internet network for many years. These phone calls pass the voice as data over the Internet. Currently BT / OpenReach are moving landlines away from a dedicated network (PSTN) to the Internet. Home phone users will need the Internet and will be able to plug the landline into the router. This usually gives a much better signal quality to the phone call.

VoIP is a technology that allows fixed line phones access the Internet. As the name suggests it is the technology to send the phone call as date over the Internet from the router to the destination. It is not a mobile phone technology but does work with VoWiFi which is a mobile phone technology.
